Bulgarian vineyard trimming tradition observed in Sungurlare for rich crops

Governor Valcho Cholakov gave honour to the citizens and guests of Sungurlare municipality taking part in the traditional celebrations on the occasion of 14 February – Vine-grower’s Day.

The best vine-dressers of homemade white vine were rewarded for 24th  time. Over 30 participants joined in the competition and demonstrated once more time the unbelievable traditions of this region in production of the divine beverage. Yordan Kyumyurdjiev has been crowned the King of Vineyards. After  the award ceremony those who were present observed an old Bulgarian tradition of vineyard trimming. Bulgarian Orthodox church clergymen held a consecration service for health.

Vasil Pandeliev – Mayor of Sungurlare municipality, Vladimir Krumov – Deputy Governor, members of the parliament, mayors from the region and representatives of the local administration were among the official guests of the festivities.

14th February is observed in Bulgaria as Saint Trifon’s Day who is protecting vine-dressers, tavern-keepers and gardeners, alias Zarezan.

According to custom on this day the owners of vineyards must trim several vine-twigs and then throw vine over the grape roots.
